King Tide Recap - 1/22/23

The Great Egret | February 4, 2023

We had a great morning on Sunday, January 23, at South Ponto Beach! The king tide almost reached the end of the concrete walk from the parking lot. While this is an exciting phenomenon to observe, it is also important to see because these tides could be what we regularly have in the future as sea levels rise.

We had a great turnout from citizen scientists who took photos and uploaded them to the California Coastal Commission King Tide Project. The CCC keeps historical photos of the California Coast to document sea level rise. Batiquitos Lagoon, Preserve Calavera, City of Carlsbad Climate Action Plan Team, and California State Parks all had tables with information and activities for kids and kids-at-heart to enjoy. Complementary coffee and donuts were provided for everyone who joined us. The king tide was an impressive sight that we were happy so many people were able to witness. And if you weren’t able to make it, we hope you join us next time! Be sure to look out for king tide and other event information updates on our website.
