Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Vision:

A pristine coastal wetland that forever connects people to nature and inspires all to protect it

Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Mission:

Preserve, protect and enhance Batiquitos Lagoon

PRESERVE: Maintain all elements of the Lagoon and its associated watershed and habitats in a manner most useful to the native flora and fauna.

PROTECT: Watch and analyze all activity taking place near the lagoon and within its watershed to assure no damage will be incurred by the lagoon due to those actions. Use public outreach and political means to maximize the environmental and recreational value while minimizing the negative influence and effects of development.

ENHANCE: Lead efforts to eliminate invasive plants and related efforts to restore habitats to their natural state. Provide Educational programs to interact with people of all ages and raise conservation awareness. Ensure that the trail, benches, and other facilities near the lagoon are attractive and functional to maximize the pleasure of users.

City Nature Challenge

Come join us at Batiquitos Lagoon on Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28 for a bio blitz! We will have an information table at the trailhead on Gabbiano Lane and guides along the trail from 9–11 a.m. and 2–4 p.m. on both days.

This is a citizen science project to collect biodiversity data for environmental management and conservation. You take pictures of nature such as plants, birds, and other animals using the iNaturalist app. The app will help you identify the image and once confirmed, will document the number of species we find. It’s as easy as that!

Some Tips To Help You Prepare

  • You will need a smartphone for this event.
  • Download the iNaturalist app on your phone.
  • Watch the YouTube tutorial: "Become a Citizen Scientist! How To Use iNaturalist."
  • Practice using the iNaturalist app prior to the event.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as a hat, tennis or hiking shoes and wear sunscreen.
  • Please bring your own reusable water bottle, to minimize single-use plastics.
  • Please be aware that it is nesting season, so stay on the trails and do not touch or disturb plants, animals or habitats.

The Nature Center is located towards the west end of the trailhead at 7380 Gabbiano Lane, Carlsbad Ca. Parking is available on the street. We have a public bathroom and water available in the Nature Center. We hope you will join this friendly competition to find and document the most species possible!
