Safety at the Lagoon

Everything is better when we play it safe!

Batiquitos Lagoon and the surrounding habitat are an ecologial preserve, that is for the protection of the birds, fish, plants, insects and animals that live here. Please do not disturb the wildlife or habitat or take anything from the lagoon area, that includes, plants, flowers and shells. Stay on the trail within the roped area. Remember you are out in nature, tree limbs can come down and the trail can become slippery due to heavy rains, which can also cause erosion of bluffs, so use caution when you are here. Snakes (including rattlesnakes), bobcats, coyotes, spiders, rats, bees along with many other animals live here at the lagoon. It is there home so you may see them when you are on the trail, please keep your distance and be respecful.

  • Masks are required on the trail.
  • Walks generally last around 1 ½ hours and include the nature center, we recommend that students have sturdy shoes, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and snacks.
  • The general walk is about ¼ mile down the trail to the pack rat den and back.
  • There are 8 picnic tables under the tress by the Nature Center that can be used for snacks or lunch.
  • We recommend that 2 adult chaperones accompany each group of 10-15 students.
  • We recommend that group size be kept to 30 or under, we can sometimes accommodate larger groups if we have docents available.
  • In the event of light rain or sprinkles we will probably still do the walk. If here is heavy rain or a storm you should probably reschedule. You will have the contact information of your docent ahead of time in case anything comes up.
